Kiwnis International, founded in 1915 and headquartered in
Indianapolis, Indiana, is a thriving orginization of service-minded men
and women who respond to the unique needs of their communities and
address worldwide issues by "Serving the Children of the World."
We became a part of that history when the Kiwanis
Club of Rincon was organized in May of 1972. We were sponsored by the
Kiwanis Club of Tucson, the oldest Club in Division 6 of the Southwest
District of Kiwanis International.
The Rincon Kiwanis Club has been sponsor of a number
of school programs over the years of our existance, and received the
Kiwanis International Honorable Mention Single Service Award for the
BUG Program - Bring Up Grades. In this program, we recognized any
student for improving his/her grades.Competing with no one but
themselves, each grading period is compared to the base period of the
first grading period of the school year. We award certificates, BUG
pins, T-Shirts, and special awards according to the level and number of
improvement. The T-shirt is imprinted with the school emblem, Kiwanis
logo, and the statement, "I brought up my grades at (Name of
School)." Truley Nolan (a local pest control company) furnished the
T-shirts, with their emblem on the back. We made these awards at 4
grading periods a year at a cost of about $500 per period.
